BOOK LOVERS GROUP
Book: THE CUCKOO'S EGG BY CLIFF STOLL
Venue: Sheraton Hotel, Exchange Bar

Join us at the popular SBC Book Club. Enjoy lively discussions over a drink or two. Whether you are an avid reader or would like to read more, you'll love our relaxed group.

The book we'll be talking about this month is The Cuckoo's Egg by Cliff Stoll

"Spy stories are great fun. James Bond, Tom Clancy... And Now Cliff Stoll, with only one minor difference. This one's true.

In the Eighties, Clifford Stoll ran out of money for his research into Astronomy at the University of Berkeley and was 'recycled' into the lab's computer division. A couple of days into his new job, his boss brought an interesting problem to his attention, their accounting software - logging, and charging for, time on the mainframe - was missing 75 cents. Would he like to look into it?

A year later Clifford Stoll had tracked a hacker across half the planet, through dozens of supposedly secure military and civilian networks, he'd interfaced with a dozen or more three-letter agencies (CIA, FBI, NSA, CID and more) and become one of the world's most respected experts in computer security.

Light bar meals available (decide on the day).

Afterwards you can cycle back from Linlithgow which is approximately 22 miles.

August Sander, Girl in a Fairground Caravan 1926-1932Lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon whether you're an avid gallery goer or a very occasional visitor. Join us for a relaxed afternoon followed by cafe conversation.

"August Sander (1876-1964) was one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the 20th century. During his whole career he photographed individuals and groups of people that he then classified according to their occupations and position in society. This lifelong attempt to document the German people resulted in the ambitious project entitled People of the 20th Century.

The exhibition is taken from a major collection of over 170 modern prints, recently placed on long loan to ARTIST ROOMS courtesy of Anthony d’Offay. The prints were produced from the original plates by August Sander’s grandson, Gerd Sander, who himself is a photographer and master printer. Together the collection of photographs gives a brilliant overview of Sander’s achievements as an artist, photographer and recorder of history."

FILM LOVERS GROUP: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
Cinema: Filmhouse, 88 Lothian Road  EH3 9BZ Map
Meeting point: Near the ticket desk

The Night of the Hunter

"The Night of the Hunter – the only film the great actor Charles Laughton ever directed – is truly a stand-alone masterwork.

A horror movie with qualities of a Grimm fairy tale, it stars a sublimely sinister Robert Mitchum as a travelling preacher named Harry Powell, whose nefarious motives for marrying a fragile widow, played by Shelley Winters, are uncovered by her terrified young children.

Graced by images of eerie beauty and a sneaky sense of humour, this ethereal, expressionistic American classic is cinema’s most eccentric rendering of the battle between good and evil.

Film geeks will note with pleasure that Carter Burwell quoted the melody of the hymn sung by both Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish in this film in his score for the Coens' True Grit."

Director: Charles Laughton

Starring: Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lilian Gish, Billy Chapin, James Gleason, Sally Ann Bruce.

Certificate: 12

Duration: 92 minutes
