BOOK LOVERS GROUP
Book: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Venue: Sheraton Hotel, Exchange Bar

Join us at the popular SBC Book Club. Enjoy lively discussions over a drink or two. Whether you are an avid reader or would like to read more, you'll love our relaxed group.

The book we'll be talking about this month is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

"The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs... "  'Compulsively readable' Daily Telegraph

Light bar meals available (decide on the day).

UNION CANAL WALK - EDINBURGH QUAY TO RATHO

Meeting point: Edinburgh Quay, Fountainbridge (start of the canal behind Cargo Bar) Map

Along the Union Canal, Edinburgh, Scotland by UmX.

Lovely walk along the Union Canal. It's a flat walk so perfect if you enjoy walking but are not keen on hills! The walk is approx 9 miles and will take between 2 and 3.5 hours depending on our pace.

At Ratho, we'll stop at the Bridge Inn for a late lunch. From there we can take the bus back to Edinburgh or, the more enthusiastic among us may like to walk back.

Practicalities
Comfortable walking footwear with good grip is suggested. As is layered clothing and a waterproof jacket in case of rain. As we all know this 'Summer' is proving most unpredictable!  Bring water and a snack you can eat on the go if you will need  to eat before 2.30pm.

Pictures from walks on our facebook page (You don't need to be registered with facebook to view.)

The Time Traveler's Wife

After the book received rave reviews in our Book Lovers Group last month, we decided to see the film.

"Based on the bestselling book 'The Time Traveler's Wife is a film about love that transcends time. Clare and Henry are in love, and Clare knows they are destined to be together. The problem is, she never knows when they will be separated - because Henry is a time traveler. Cursed with a rare genetic condition, Henry is forced to live his life shifting back and forth through time."
