at the SBC Book Club. Enjoy lively discussions over a
drink or two. Whether you are an avid reader or would like to
read more, you'll love our relaxed group.
The book we'll
be talking about this month is The Book of Skin by
Michelle Lovric
"This
book is fabulous - funny, horrific, subversive - in short a
wholly addictive read. I don't think I have enjoyed anything as
much since Perfume"
Joanne Harris
"If it doesn't scoop all the prizes, we live in an unjust world.
It's an absolute corker ... It's years since I enjoyed a novel
this much - or felt such strong envy of an author for having the
breadth and richness of imagination to create such a world" A.N.
Wilson
"This is, essentially, a love story told by a delightfully
riotous collection of characters and voices ... Fantastically
gripping" Marie Claire
"A witty, exciting, over-the-top page-turner which becomes
increasingly addictive... Quite unlike anything else around -
and all the better for that" Daily Mail
Light bar meals available (decide on the day).

HILLWALK - THE OCHIL HILLS, DOLLAR
Leader: Ian F

Picture: From a previous Dollar Glen walk
It's 3 years since we last went to Dollar so we are looking forward to
getting back to this beautiful area. Weather permitting this walk will
provide the chance to stretch the legs with a steep climb up one of the
Ochil's highest peaks - King's Seat Hill. We will walk alongside
the picturesque waterfalls of Dollar Glen to the atmospheric Castle
Campbell. Conditions permitting we'll then ascend King's Seat Hill
and follow a series of ridges and peaks before descending into Glenquey
Glen. If the weather's bad we'll stick to Dollar and Glenquey Glens. At
the end of the walk we'll stop for a drink/bite to eat in Dollar before
returning to Edinburgh
It's a moderate walk with some steep sections.
The walk is approximately 8 miles and will take around 4 hours with
2000ft of height gain
Practicalities
Given the recent wintery conditions and potentially water logged
conditions of the hills, you'll need good
walking boots, gaiters
(if you have them), warm
and waterproof clothing, hat, gloves and a fleece as
weather can be changeable.
Remember clean shoes for the journey as well.
Car share
We will be meeting outside The Dome (bar) in George Street on Sunday morning to arrange
car sharing. If you have a car please bring it as you can always leave
it at George Street
if there are too many cars. Parking in town is free on a Sunday.
Please note: This is an
informal arrangement and as such we can't guarantee a
lift as it depends on sufficient drivers.
Aternatively you can meet us at Burnside Car Park in Dollar at 10am.
Cost per car: The journey to the Ochil Hills
and back from George St is approx 80 miles. At 22p per mile that is a total
of £18 per car. Your contribution is: £9 if 2 people in car, £6 if 3
people and £4.50 if 4 people. Please bring the right change if you can.

FILM LOVERS GROUP: THE ARTIST
Cinema: Filmhouse, 88
Lothian Road EH3 9BZ Map
Meeting point: Entrance foyer at 8pm

"An honest-to-goodness black-and-white
silent picture made by modern French filmmakers in Hollywood, The
Artist is a spirited,
hilarious and moving delight. A sensation in Cannes, Michel Hazanavicius'
playful love letter to the movies' early days spins on a variation on an A
Star Is Born-like relationship between a dashing Douglas Fairbanks-style
star (Jean Dujardin, who won the best actor prize in Cannes), whose
career wanes with the coming of sound, and a dazzling young actress (Bérénice
Bejo), whose popularity skyrockets at the same time.
Meticulously made in the 1.33 aspect
ratio with intertitles and a superb score, The
Artist has great fun with silent film conventions just as it rigourously
adheres to them, turning its abundant love for the look and ethos of the
1920s into a treat that will be warmly embraced by movie lovers of every
persuasion."
Director: Michel Hazanavicius
Starring: Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell,
Penelope Ann Miller
Certificate: PG
Duration: 100 minutes
