BOOK LOVERS GROUP
Book: Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
Venue: Sheraton Hotel, Exchange Bar
|
|
Join us at the popular SBC Book Club. Enjoy lively
discussions over a drink or two. Whether you are an avid reader
or would like to read more, you'll love our relaxed group.
The book we'll
be talking about this month is Kafka on the Shore by
Haruki Murakami.
"Kafka on the Shore follows the fortunes of two
remarkable characters. Kafka Tamura runs away from home at
fifteen, under the shadow of his father's dark prophesy. The
aging Nakata, tracker of lost cats, who never recovered from a
bizarre childhood affliction, finds his pleasantly simplified
life suddenly turned upside down. Their parallel odysseys are
enriched throughout by vivid accomplices and mesmerising dramas.
Murakami's new novel is at once a classic tale of quest, but it
is also a bold exploration of mythic and contemporary taboos, of
patricide, of mother-love, of sister-love. Above all it is an
entertainment of a very high order."
"I've never read a novel that I found so compelling because of
its narrative inventiveness and love of storytelling...great
entertainment." Stuart Jeffries, The Guardian
Optional light meal available for around £10 (decide on
the day).

Exhibition: The Conversation Piece: Scenes of Fashionable Life
This exhibition will explore the tradition of the
‘Conversation Piece’, group portraits of high-society sitters in
strikingly informal situations. The Conversation Piece depicts

NORDIC WALKING IN HOLYROOD PARK
Meeting point: Cafe at Commonwealth Pool,
Map

Nordic Walking is a new trend in fitness: simple to learn, easy
to practise anywhere, anytime, and a very social way of keeping fit.
Originally developed in Finland by cross-country skiers who wanted to
stay in shape over the summer, it's a terrific low-impact activity which
helps you burn 20-40% more energy through the gentle upper body workout
you get walking with the poles. The Introductory Session takes between
1.5 and 2 hours, and no special fitness is required to get started. Once
you know the technique, you can practise at your own level.
Poles and tuition provided by qualified instructor Anne-Marie. Wear
comfortable weather appropriate clothing and trainers/flexible soled
shoes rather than walking boots.

Exhibition: Artist Rooms
Artist
Rooms is a new collection of international contemporary art which
has been created through one of the largest and most imaginative gifts
of art ever made to museums in Britain. The
guiding principle for the creation of Artist Rooms is the
concept of individual rooms devoted to particular artists. The
collection of 725 works comprises 50 rooms by 25 artists and includes
major bodies of work by seminal figures such as Diane Arbus, Joseph
Beuys, Vija Celmins, Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff
Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Nauman, Ed Ruscha
and Andy Warhol. These are accompanied by an additional ten works by
seven artists. Many of the rooms were conceived as specific
installations by the artists themselves and have been assembled so that
the work of important post-war artists can be seen and appreciated in
depth.
